A Brief History
This was the first class of 2-8-0 freight locomotive to be built in this country, the prototype being built in 1903. Churchward's design was much in advance of it's time, and the engines remained the standard freight design on the GWR for the rest of it's existence. The 2800 class was a superb goods locomotives. According to drivers, they steamed beautifully and never let you down even with the heaviest loads. There were large allocations in the sheds around the Birmingham area, Neath and Llanelly, Croes Newydd and Swindon. Many engines clocked up well over a million miles in service.
