A Brief History
The LMS Compounds, based on the earlier Midland Compounds were an extraordinary class of locomotive. One hundred and ninety were turned out between 1924 and 1927, and more would have been built had not William Stanier, who disliked the engines, taken over as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS from Henry Fowler who had designed them. They were designed for fast passenger work, and in 1928, as publicity stunt, one member of the class made history by running from London to Edinburgh non-stop with a specially designed tender.
